Effects of solar wind dynamic pressure on the ionospheric O fluence during the 31 August 2005 storm

چکیده
[1] The Multifluid‐Lyon‐Fedder‐Mobarry (MFLFM) global simulation model incorporating an ionospheric cusp O outflow model based on an empirical relation between downward DC Poynting flux and O outflow flux regulated by the precipitating electron number flux (Fen) is used to simulate the 31 August 2005 storm. A baseline run incorporating the original solar wind data is contrasted against a case where the solar wind dynamic pressure (Pdyn) is artificially adjusted to see what effects this variable has on the O fluence generated in the model. Consistent with data, it is found that both the fluence and O outflow flux have a positive correlation with the solar wind dynamic pressure. Additionally, changes in Pdyn affect the downward Poynting flux only marginally and regulates both outflow flux and cusp outflow area via Fen. Increases in Pdyn lead to increased cusp electron precipitation, which has the physical effect of enhancing the upwelling O population available for outflow.

Investigation of the effects of geomagnetic storms on ionospheric irregularities using the combination of ground-based GNSS and SWARM satellites
Geomagnetic storms are one of the main causes of ionospheric perturbations in different sizes, depending on their intensity, which could disturb radio signals passing through this medium. On September 6-12, 2017, the sudden storm commencement (SSC) was the most massive geomagnetic storm of the year due to the X9 solar flare caused by a coronal mass ejection (CME). IMF-Bz and Dst values increase...
متن کاملMartian ionospheric responses to dynamic pressure enhancements in the solar wind
As a weakly magnetized planet, Mars ionosphere/atmosphere interacts directly with the shocked solar wind plasma flow. Even though many numerical studies have been successful in reproducing numerous features of the interaction process, these earlier studies focused mainly on interaction under steady solar wind conditions. Recent observations suggest that plasma escape fluxes are significantly en...
متن کاملIonosphere dynamics over the Southern Hemisphere during the 31 March 2001 severe magnetic storm using multi-instrument measurement data
The effects of the 31 March 2001 severe magnetic storm on the Southern Hemisphere ionosphere have been studied using ground-based and satellite measurements. The prime goal of this comprehensive study is to track the ionospheric response from high-to-low latitude to obtain a clear understanding of storm-time ionospheric change. The study uses a combination of ionospheric Total Electron Content ...
متن کاملMagnetosphere sawtooth oscillations induced by ionospheric outflow.
The sawtooth mode of convection of Earth's magnetosphere is a 2- to 4-hour planetary-scale oscillation powered by the solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere (SW-M-I) interaction. Using global simulations of geospace, we have shown that ionospheric O(+) outflows can generate sawtooth oscillations. As the outflowing ions fill the inner magnetosphere, their pressure distends the nightside magnetic fi...

[1] On 17 September 2000 the IMF was directed continuously northward for more than 3 hours. Density fluctuations in the solar wind resulted in quasiperiodic variations in the solar wind dynamic pressure, and correlated fluctuations also occurred in the IMF Bz component. The Northern Hemisphere SuperDARN radars observed bursts of highlatitude high-velocity plasma flow during this northward IMF i...
